Created in 2002, the FTSE is a world famous maker of over 120, 000 equity, bond and alternative asset class indices. With a presence in over 77 countries worldwide they provide objective market information. Owned by the Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange it is a British stock market indices provider.
The FTSE operates what is called the FTSE 100 Index and FTSE 250 Index and about 100, 000 other indices. They operate indices in global equity, fixed income, regional and partner, alternative investment, investment strategy and responsible investment.
The famous FTSE 100 Index is a share index of 100 top UK capitalized companies that are listed on the London Stock Exchange. The ten largest FTSE 100 companies according to their market capitalization as of March 2011 are BHP Billiton, Royal Dutch Shell, HSBC, Vodafone group, BP, Rio Tinto Group, GlaxoSmithKline, Unilever, British American Tobacco and BG Group.
